Damage Makes The Usual Search Harder
Clearing items from damaged vehicles is not as simple as emptying a normal car. Doors may not open, glass may be spread across seats, the boot may be crushed, or water may have soaked paperwork and bags. Start with the safe areas. Open what opens easily, avoid sharp edges, and do not force panels or doors that are twisted after an impact.
Check Paperwork First
Paperwork often sits in the glovebox, door pocket, sun visor, centre console or boot folder. Look for V5C papers, service books, repair invoices, insurance letters, parking permits, MOT paperwork and any garage notes. Even if not every document is needed for collection, the owner may want the record later.
If the glovebox is jammed or wet, take care. A damaged hinge or glass-filled footwell is not worth an injury. Mention trapped paperwork to the buyer if you cannot reach it safely.
Personal Items Hide In Small Spaces
After a crash, belongings move. Coins, cards, keys, glasses, chargers, headphones, work passes and personal letters can slide under seats or into corners. Check the centre console, seat pockets, boot side panels, under-floor spaces and anywhere a bag may have spilled.
Do not forget removable extras. Child seats, phone mounts, dashcams, memory cards, toll tags and number plate screws can all be overlooked when the focus is on damage.
Work Vehicles Need A Slower Pass
If the damaged vehicle was used for work, give it a separate search. Vans, pickups and trade cars may hold tools, fuel cards, delivery paperwork, company documents, chargers, spare keys, stock or items fitted into racking.
Signwriting and business details may also need attention before disposal. If equipment is trapped behind a damaged door or tailgate, tell the collector and decide whether the vehicle needs to be opened at a garage before it leaves.
For company vehicles, note who cleared the contents and who authorised release. That avoids later confusion if a missing tool or document is blamed on the collection rather than the earlier accident.
Flood, Fire And Glass Change The Risk
Flood-damaged vehicles may have wet carpets, mouldy smells and electrical faults. Fire-damaged vehicles may have soot, sharp trim and unstable interior pieces. Broken-glass vehicles can hide shards in seats, boots and door pockets.
Use gloves or help where sensible, but do not turn a scrap collection into a rescue mission for minor items. If access is unsafe, photograph the blocked area and explain what may still be inside.
Finish The Search Before Agreeing The Day
Once the car is collected, retrieving forgotten belongings becomes much harder. Before booking, confirm who has searched the car, what was removed, what remains trapped and whether the driver needs to know about unsafe access.
If the car is stored away from home, ask for a final chance to inspect it during daylight rather than waiting until the truck is on site.
